The Design

The batteries are connected in a so-called split power supply. This means that the two 4.5V batteries are not simply connected in series to give 9V, but also the center point of 4.5V is used in the circuit. I think with this extra voltage the design of the output stage is simplified somewhat. A disadvantage is that it is no longer possible to supply the radio from a simple 9V adapter. Split power supplies were often found in France.

The current draw is not equal from the two batteries, because one of them supplies the HF stage. The radio draws 10.6mA from one battery and 12.0mA from the other (low volume)! Thus for optimal battery life you must swap the batteries every hundred hours of play.

This Object

There was serious corrosion on the battery leads (because of leaked batteries) but is wasn't too difficult to repair it.

It became Piet Hoen's birthday present in 2000.
