 part of the dropping resistor was bridged by a modern resistor, but this appeared to be done quite good so I didn't touch it. The reason why the radio didn't work was an interrupted IF coil, which I bypassed with a resistor and a capacitor.  Then I found out that the dial chord was wrongly wound, so I had to pull the chassis and rewind it.
